When it comes to the subject of steroids, it’s a very, very tricky subject. The legislation that controls steroid legality is tied up in the federal bureaucracy, namely the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). During the Nixon Administration in the 1970s, the DEA was created, and following the United Nations charter on drug enforcement, the drug scheduling system was created. Steroids were classified on it, but more or less in the same category as prescription drugs. The truth is, steroids have been something that has existed in the injectable sense for more than a century with the synthesis of injectable testosterone. Testosterone is very potent androgen, but aside from its potency, it’s important to understand that it is also very effective at getting the job done in terms of helping people. For that reason alone, it is often used as a prescription drug. Many other androgenic and estrogenic drugs fall into that same category: very potent but require a prescription to be used.
So while there are some drugs that are legal with a prescription, there are others that are just flat out banned for human use. It’s also important to note that aside from those that see a real medical benefit, there are some that are just so toxic and dangerous that the FDA and DEA have ruled them completely illegal. So what kinds of steroids are expressly illegal?
The Common Illegal Anabolic Steroids
For the most part, your typical bodybuilding steroids are completely illegal. Most of these had usage or purposes in other ways. For example, one of the most popular drugs of choice among those in the bikini and physique crowd is Anavar. It’s a drug that can be dosed orally and does not aromatize, making it a crowd favourite among women and those looking for something seen as “relatively lowkey.” Oxandrolone, otherwise known as Anavar, was originally used to help burn victims or those with muscle-wasting diseases build muscle. Scientists realized very quickly that it was amazing at doing just that, but in a stunning coincidence, meatheads and bodybuilders realized this, too.
So while anavar continues to be used for its medical effectiveness, it is strictly banned for recreational or experimental usage. The same can be said for another popular steroids, Nandrolone, otherwise known as Deca-Durabolin. Deca-Durabolin is unlike Anavar in that rather than dry, shredding sorts of gains, its a messier, sloppier type of steroid. Winstrol and Dianabol are also others that are illegal. But while it originally had therapeutic benefits, it since became illegal due to its toxicity. It’s important to note that the primary reason anabolics are banned en masse is due to the danger in terms of using them irresponsibly. While it is possible to responsibly use these substances, because of the risks and permanent damage they can induce, they tend to be illegal in totality. This is why even though drugs like testosterone or HGH or almost completely healthy to use, they are banned.
But aside from the big name steroids, there are other steroids that are not as well known that continue to be banned as time goes on. One of the most popular kinds of steroids that has been marketed as an alternative to traditional steroids are Selective Androgen-Receptor Modulators (SARMs). During the period of 2013-2015, SARMS hit the bodybuilding community in a resurgent effort as most underground labs and bodybuilding fringe companies marketed them as safe alternatives to traditional steroids.
However, what they didn’t express to most of their clientele was the fact that SARMs are actually incredible toxic. While some of them do not induce extreme anabolic properties, they bring with them the same side effects and a higher level of toxicity not normally seen in traditional anabolics. While they continued to be legal for a brief period of time, eventually the FDA and DEA cracked down on SARMs and ruled that they were illegal for sale or consumption. While there are rare bottles of SARMs out there somewhere, and in fact, some websites still selling them, the truth is that SARMs are, for the most part, illegal steroids.
There are bioavailable DHEA projects that are fully legally and supposedly just as effective, but remember, if it isn’t illegal in the bodybuilding community, then the sad truth is, it probaly doesn’t work all that well.
