We take a look at the legality of the popular anabolic oral steroid – Dianabol and the penalties for those in the United States.
One of the most widely used anabolic steroids since the early 1960s, Dianabol (a new brand name for the oral steroid methandrostenolone) is a derivative of testosterone and allows users to take advantage of strong anabolic and androgenic properties – especially useful for bodybuilders and athletes looking to squeeze every single drop of performance out of their training programs.
First made available in 1960 and then catching wildfire as far as popularity is concerned in 1962 through 1964, this particular steroid never really entered the mainstream consciousness of the general population (even though it’s been around for more than 50 years, 9 people out of 10 on the street would have absolutely no idea what you were talking about if you set the name Dianabol) it established itself as the most popular anabolic steroid and a solution that definitely got the job done.
Incredibly easy to use and very effective, the production of Dianabol was at its highest during the 1960s and the 1970s before production rates really started to detail all the 1980s for a variety of different reasons. The biggest reason that things dropped off significantly was because of the US ban on anabolic steroids that was handed down around this point in time, with this particular steroid (and all other US testosterone generics) being pulled off of the shelves permanently.
Even still, the popularity of this anabolic steroid has not dropped off even though it’s illegal to produce or distribute in the United States. It’s maybe the most popular anabolic steroid on the black market (especially since it is an oral steroid rather than an injectable one), and regularly fetches a considerable amount of money on this illicit market as well.
The overwhelming majority of production occurs overseas (as well as in Mexico), and a considerable amount of the global supply of Dianabol finds its way to the United States before it is consumed. Close in the results that it is capable of producing to the still available Androl 50 anabolic steroid, it also shares many of the same side effects.
Gynecomastia is often associated with this particular steroid, which is why it is so important to cycle properly with “drugs”, and water retention is almost always a major issue as well. As more subcutaneous water builds up (alongside fat) muscle is wasted and washed away, almost countermanded the muscle synthesis results that Dianabol produces in the first place. In some severe cases this results in an almost net effect canceling each other out, making the supplementation of this anabolic steroid almost useless.
Some individuals that have used this particular anabolic steroid on a regular basis have also reported oily skin conditions and acting as well as rapid facial and body hair growth. There are tenuous reports of aggression being increased and elevated while on a cycle of this steroid, though more research is necessary to really determine the validity of “steroid rage” and whether or not it is a legitimate issue.
As it is mildly androgenic, Dianabol has become a very popular solution for men that are dealing with lower levels of testosterone and those that aren’t able to elevate those levels of testosterone using more traditional or over-the-counter testosterone boosters.
It isn’t a pleasant experience having to procure this testosterone boosting agent through black-market channels, but unless the United States decides to reclassify anabolic steroids, it’s likely to always be considered a controlled substance – and one that will carry significant risks to procure and to use.
Hopefully lawmakers and legislators in the future will understand the value of using anabolic steroids like these for medical purposes to outweigh the risks those that use them for recreational purposes have to contend with, though the future is still quite murky.
