Can You Cycle Anabolic Steroids Without Testosterone?

We discuss the positive and negative side effects when planning and conducting a steroid cycle without the usage of Testosterone.

We discuss the positive and negative side effects when planning and conducting a steroid cycle without the usage of Testosterone.

Why Should I Use Testosterone in a Steroid Cycle?

Just about any anabolic steroids, be it oral steroids or injectable steroids, your natural (endogenous) testosterone levels will be effected to a degree. Natural hormone levels wont be boosted when using anabolic steroids, they will be inhibited or suppressed. This can cause the user a number of issues.

Endogenous testosterone is controlled by a prat of the brain called the hypothalamus. This is like the control centre for all hormone secretion in the human body. A computer if you will which houses a three key receptors when it comes to understanding testosterone suppression from androgen use.

  • Androgen Receptors: These can be activated when anabolic steroids are used as they directly interact with the androgen receptor (AR). When AR receptors are activated the hypothalamus will start to reduce levels of hormones as it senses androgens are high in the blood.

  • Estrogen Receptors: Estorgen has three forms of or subtypes. These are; estradiol, estrone and estriol. The important one that causes side effects such as, gynecomastia and other health implications is estradiol. When ER receptors become activated in the hypothalamus, again, the brain will start to control androgen output. It does this by firstly reducing testosterone secretion.

  • Progesterone Receptors: You may have heard about the hormone progesterone when reading about gynecomastia and its causes before and to be honest, you don’t need to worry about it. The progesterone receptor (PgR) is increased and decreased mostly by estrogen levels. However, when PgR becomes activated in the brain, the main hormone computer (hypothalamus) will decrease levels of circulating androgens.

Which Steroids Cause The Most Testosterone Suppression?

This is a question often asked by beginners and the answer is fairly simple:

Deca-Durabolin and Trenbolone.

Yes, these two popular injectable anabolic steroids cause a lot of testosterone inhibition. More so than testosterone variants such as, Testosterone Enanthate, Cypionate, Propionate or Suspension.

In medical studies, it will take around a 100mg single shot of Deca Durabolin to cause testosterone levels to fall to levels that are classified as hypogondal. This is almost a zero reading.

In the United States hypondal levels are stated as below 300ng/dl. In the United Kingdom, this is below 10nmol/L. This is when hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be prescribed by an endocrinologist because of low testosterone levels.

Injecting testosterone can also cause hypogonadism, but the dosage used will determine the length of time it takes for endogenous testosterone levels to be reached. On a moderate steroid cycle of 500mg per week, this occurs in around 2-3 weeks, but can be speeded again if an aromatase inhibitor (AI) is not used.

What Anabolic Steroids Wont Cause Hypogonadism?

A lot of oral steroids will not cause the body to reduce natural levels of testosterone to reach hypogondal amounts. Dianabol at 20mg ingested daily will cause inhibition, but rarely ‘shutdown’. But that’s not to say other sude effects wont be experienced.

Anavar and Winstrol are two more DHT-based steroids that will likely cause suppression of the HPTA (Hypothalamus-PituitaryTestes-Axis). Large doses and an extended periods of many months would have to be completed for ‘shutdown’ to be present in the steroid user.

However, even though testosterone has been only reduced it doe not mean that side effects associated with low testosterone wont be evident. They will. These include; erectile dysfunction, lethargy, decrease in sexual desire, strength and performance.

The main reason testosterone in injected when steroid cycles are planned and conducted is because the users natural levels are zero. So to avoid low testosterone symptoms, a testosterone steroidal product is used.

Unfortunately, these isnt really a way of avoiding those negative side effects. Some suggest dietary supplement testosterone boosters and others state Proviron (Mesterolone) can be used as a substitute. If you decide to go down the Proviron route, 25-50mg taken daily is a place to start, but don’t count on low testosterone symptoms not catching up with you eventually.
